Wivenhoe Wraag

TRY getting off Wivenhoe railway station if you're in a wheelchair!

One woman says it is “totally unacceptable” that the station is off limits to people in wheelchairs.

Pam Glover has started a campaign to get improvements at Wivenhoe station, which is a no-go zone for passengers with mobility problems.

It is also difficult for mothers with prams or pushchairs.

The coast-bound platform can only be exited by a footbridge or steps to Clifton Terrace.

People who rely on wheelchairs or buggies have to get off the train at Colchester, where railway staff call them a taxi.

Miss Glover, 56, said: “I’ve always felt it’s just totally unacceptable that wheelchair users are told to get off at Colchester.

“We now need an accessible station, not only for disabled people but for everyone.

“It’s only the fit and unencumbered who can use Wivenhoe station at the moment.”

Together with friend Heather Edwards, 50, she has formed Wivenhoe Railway Access for All Group (Wraag).

Miss Glover, of Vanessa Drive, said the group was investigating different options and funding sources.

Ideas include a ramped bridge or a level crossing at the end of the platform where wooden planks are laid across the tracks.

Another possibility is making use of the underpass, but that gets muddy and floods in bad weather.
