Colchester is Britain's oldest recorded town and has Iron Age and Roman remains on view.
It is also a thriving 21st Century community with much to offer the resident and visitor.
The picture above shows the Norman castle, built on the foundations of the Roman Temple of Claudius, which was razed by Boadicea in AD60-61.
Find out more about the ancient town of Colchester or buy local cycling maps at www.visitcolchester.com or pop into the Visit Colchester info centre opposite the castle.
Cycle tourists should look at the Colchester Cycling pages on how to get to and from Harwich port. As well as the route provided, Sustrans provides maps of Route 1 and Route 51 at www.sustrans.org.uk
Current cycle trails in the area include:
England's Cycling Country routes
Witchfinders' Trail around Manningtree, and
The Painters Trail three short rides (or one long one!) between Manningtree and Sudbury.
In addition, CCC and Colchester Rovers members are currently working on a route network ,to be called the Colchester Rose. This will be able to be used on an ad hoc basis by families wanting a ten to 15-mile spin, as well as people wanting a longer ride without going too far from town. The Colchester Rose would also be capable to stage a Dutch-style three-day leisure cycling event - and we have one pencilled-in for August 2008.
