Points warning to drivers
COLCHESTER Cycling Campaign has warned drivers to avoid switching to a bike when they're tipsy - as they might still get points on their licence.
CCC says the Highway Code advises cyclists not to ride under the influence of drink or drugs, including medicine.
The group says drink-riders can be charged with either "cycling under the influence" or the archaic "being drunk in charge of a carriage".
Chairman Will Bramhill said: "We are concerned that drivers worried about drink-driving may get their bike out instead.
"Alcohol decreases co-ordination but heightens confidence - an unfortunate combination if you are on two wheels."
Will said the police didn't have the power to breath-test a cyclist but would use other means to measure if a cyclist was affected by alcohol.
However, if a breath test was given voluntarily, it could be used as evidence in court.
Will warned that drivers who were found drunk on a bike could get points on their driving licence. "The experts are divided on this, but we believe courts can put points on your licence, which could tot up to disqualification.
"The best way to stay safe if you drink over Christmas is to use a taxi."
