Clingoe Hill optimism
CCC has received information that leaves us quietly optimistic about future pedestrian and cycle facilities across the Colchester-Clacton A133 road at Clingoe Hill, near Essex University.
The Uni and bike/ped campaigners were pressing for change following the deaths of two students within a year. They died in collisions with cars while crossing the 70mph road which runs between the Uni and student accommodation on the Greenstead estate.
The pair had both chosen to cross the road rather than use a subway which is often flooded and where muggings and sex attacks have taken place. Another crossing near the Greenstead roundabout takes pedestrians substantially off the so-called "desire line".
We can't yet go into details of what is being planned (it is not public yet) but we are pleased with progress so far. We will bring you more newas as soon as we can.
The work is likely to be carried out as part of a new entrance to the planned University Research Park.
A roundabout had been proposed as part of the scheme, but CCC had always argued in favour of signals with a pedestrian crossing.
Whatever happens on the surface, it is likely that the subway will stay, although there will be improvements to sight lines.
