Better biking near North Station
CCC is pressing Essex County Council for changes at Colchester North Station to help cyclists.
At present, riders have to negotiate the roundabouts at either end of the "station strip" - the road between Essex Hall and the Boadicea roundabout. There are on-road cycle lanes but these often leave riders in a dangerous position on the approach to the roundabouts, and improvements are needed.
With developments in north Colchester coming on line, including the stadium, park-and-ride, and more housing and industry, it is vital that better bus links are provided.
CCC hopes to piggy-back on to these, with cyclists able to use new bus lanes between Bruff Close and the Albert junction.
This would mean reduced car capacity on the "station strip", though this could be addressed with a proposed new road and tunnel - outlined in the Local Development Framework - between the Asda roundabout and Cowdray Avenue. See the illustration below for what this might look like! (Thanks to the folks at http://maps.live.com for our base pictures).
