Motorists driving more slowly
New figures on Vehicle Speeds in Great Britain 2005 show that, although 50% of drivers still break the 30mph speed limit when not prevented by congestion, this is a marked reduction from the 67% who were doing so in 1999.
The number travelling at more than 35mph in 30mph limits has also fallen from 50% to 21% over the same period, with other encouraging reductions in speeding on built-up roads.
On non-built-up roads there has been less progress however, and the proportion of HGVs speeding on these roads remains a particularly serious problem – not least for cyclists.
CTC’s Roger Geffen said: “The good news is that drivers are getting the message that speeding kills, and the number of people respecting speed limits is growing steadily.
"There is still a long way to go however, especially on tackling the appalling and persistent levels of HGV speeding on rural roads.”
