CCC criticises Clacton changes
Essex County Council is in the process of consulting over changes to Clacton town centre.
Colchester Cycling Campaign is showing an interest in this as an "acid test" of Essex's attitudes to cycling - and because we have members and supporters who live and work in the resort.
So far, the plan is lacking as far as cycling is concerned.
Essex says its aims are improving road safey and relieving congestion. Unfortunately, County Hall's view of "relieving congestion" is not reducing traffic, but allowing more traffic to flow more freely. Sadly, this self-defeating policy only encourages more traffic.
CCC looked at Essex's consultation leaflet and decided that, bike-wise, the plan is lacking because:
:: there doesn't seem to be an area-wide 20mph limit
:: there are no advanced stop lines proposed
:: cyclists' accessibility is seriously compromisedby the introduction of one-way streets, with routes to the town, station, hospital and schools turned into dog-legging nightmares, and
:: there is no serious increase in cycle parking proposed.
