Cycling and fitness
You don't need to be fit to cycle - but it helps.
However, regular cycling will improve your fitness.
The most important point is that just because you are on a cycle doesn't mean you have to ride like you are in the Tour de France.
Take a trip to Holland and you will probably be surprised at how slowly the Dutch cycle. Yet start riding yourself, and you will be amazed at how quickly you can cross town, even when pedalling lightly. There's no need to break into a sweat, and no need for a shower every time you use a bike.
If you struggle when you ride a bike, it is likely your cycle is wrong for you, or you need to refine your technique and/or riding position.
There is lots written about health and cycling.
One of the best sites is this one which, even though American, covers most points in detail.
If you have a major medical problem, like a heart condition, you should take medical advice before restarting cycling
Members of the national cycling lobby group, the CTC, have encountered most medical conditions, and they write about their experiences in the CTC magazine and the online message board. It is amazing how many people are cycling quickly after double hip replacements!
