Chairman Will Bramhill was in his loft and found this vintage map from the early days of Colchester Cycling Campaign. The 100-mile ride drew about 50 people, and Phil Gentry's hand-drawn map was supplemented by Ordnance Survey maps, which we would recommend for all cycle-tourists. The ride heads north from Colchester railway station through Boxted, Stoke-by-Nayland and Polstead, to Monks Eleigh, Rattlesden and Woolpit. The most northerly point of the ride is Bardwell, roughly five miles from Thetford and Diss – and the Norfolk border. It then heads south through Bury St Edmunds, Glemsford, Cavendish, Gestingthorpe and Maplestead before going through the Colnes and Fordham. This route would make a great two- or three-day tour – or a challenge for anybody wanting to cover 100 miles in a day. |
